Christmas planning at Saint Vincent’s Services is a monumental undertaking that begins as early as October each year! This extensive effort is made possible through the generosity of numerous partners and donors who contribute funds, gift cards, toys, and games. In 2023, Saint Vincent’s Services had the privilege of collaborating with over 40 partners, raising $33,000 through various avenues, including Christmas cash, gift cards, and in-kind donations.
The annual Christmas celebration at Saint Vincent’s Services is truly a testament to the transformative power of community support. At the core of this endeavor lies a profound understanding that the joy of giving extends far beyond material gifts. The heart of all things Christmas lies with the ‘Christmas Elves,’ a group of dedicated Saint Vincent’s Services staff members who volunteer to assist in collecting donations, wrapping, distributing, and more. Christmas time at Saint Vincent’s Services fosters a sense of connection and belonging that transcends the physical presents. This personal touch validates the unique interests and desires of each individual and reinforces the message that they are valued and cherished members of the Saint Vincent’s Services family.
But the magic doesn’t stop there… hidden away in the basement of one of our residential cottages (congregate care placements) lies a secret, a Santa’s Workshop of sorts, where gifts received throughout the year are stored and prepared for distribution. This treasure serves many purposes, not only for Christmas but for birthdays, Easter, and other holidays. It replenishes our supply of board games, sporting equipment, and more throughout the year as needed.
The Christmas process begins with our dedicated Residential Counselors, who will collect wish lists from the residents in their respective cottages or living environments. These wish lists will then be passed on to the Assistant Program Managers, who will be responsible for collecting, sorting, and wrapping the gifts. Once the lists are prepared, our Development department will take them and distribute them to our donors. Even our Maintenance team gets involved, helping to pick up donated items and bring them to Santa’s Workshop, our dedicated space for gift collection and distribution. It truly is a group or… Elf effort!
The holiday season can be difficult for the nearly 60 youth in congregate care placements at Saint Vincent’s Services. While many associate the holidays with joyful gatherings, these young people face additional challenges that can make this time of year stressful and sad. Removed from their families and familiar surroundings, these children and young adults may feel a profound sense of loss and disconnection. The emphasis on togetherness and family permeating the holidays is a painful reminder of what they are missing. Feelings of grief, anger, and abandonment can surface. Their previous holiday experiences may have been tarnished by trauma, instability, or the absence of a nurturing home environment, making it challenging to fully embrace the spirit of the holidays.
While Saint Vincent’s Services strives to create a supportive and caring environment for youth, it is important to acknowledge the various emotions our youth may be experiencing during the holiday season. Providing access to counseling services, emotional support, and a safe space to express their feelings can be invaluable in helping them navigate the difficulties of any holiday. At Saint Vincent’s Services, we foster a nurturing environment where youth can thrive. Our team of skilled and compassionate staff members, from Clinicians to Case Workers, work collaboratively to create a supportive community for the children we serve. We know first-hand that it takes a village to help children reach their full potential, so we prioritize surrounding them with caring professionals committed to providing comprehensive care. Together, we are making a positive difference in the lives of the children in our care one day and one holiday at a time.
